This 1978 International Scout II Traveler was a rare example that arrived at our workshop both running and driving. The Traveler—being the long-wheelbase variant—is significantly less common than the standard short-wheelbase Scout II, making this model particularly unique.

The vehicle arrived largely complete and accompanied by a generous selection of spare parts. The build brief for this project was clear: transform the Scout into a reliable everyday driver capable of confident 4x4 off-road performance.

Body & Exterior

The Scout II Traveler arrived looking deceptively solid, but once disassembled, extensive hidden corrosion was uncovered. The lower cab and body panels required months of metal fabrication, with numerous custom sections handmade to replace rusted areas. The chassis was stripped, cleaned, and refinished, while the fiberglass roof was fully re-layered inside and out to remove embedded contaminants.

The body now wears a fresh coat of Hyundai Shadow Grey, complemented by satin black on the roof and de-chromed exterior trim for a bold, modern appearance. Custom satin-black alloy bumpers, LED lighting, and 32” Yokohama Geolandar X-AT tyres on 16x8 American Racing Baja wheels complete the refined off-road aesthetic.

Engine & Drivetrain

The 392 V8 and 4-speed manual gearbox were retained to preserve the Scout’s authenticity, both rebuilt with new seals, gaskets, and bolt-on components for improved reliability. The transfer case and driveline were fully refreshed, and the vehicle now benefits from a Fitech EFI system that delivers smoother performance and enhanced drivability. The entire undercarriage was brought back to factory-fresh specification.

Suspension & Braking

During the restoration, the suspension and braking systems were inspected, upgraded, and refinished to match the Scout’s renewed mechanical integrity. All wearable components were replaced or rebuilt, ensuring confident handling and stopping performance both on-road and off-road. The completed setup provides a balanced ride capable of long-haul touring and rugged terrain.

Interior & Trim

Inside, the transformation is just as striking. Porsche inspired brown leather on the original front and rear bench seats gives the interior a warm, timeless feel, paired with a black dash, new carpet, and fully restored gauges running through a modern American Auto Wire loom. A custom A/C and heating system was installed for year-round comfort, along with a discreetly integrated navigation system and stereo that brings modern convenience without disrupting the vintage charm.

Custom Touches

Subtle yet impactful upgrades elevate the Scout beyond a standard restoration. Satin-black exterior accents and custom bumpers add a tailored, tough aesthetic. LED lighting improves visibility, while the Fitech EFI system blends modern reliability with classic V8 character.

Following its nut-and-bolt rebuild, the Scout proved its capability immediately - completing a 4,300 km cross-country journey from Queensland to Western Australia just days after the build was finished, without a single major issue. This restoration has not only revived the Scout—it has reinvented it, ready for adventure once again.
