This short wheelbase (SWB) Scout represents the standard configuration of the International Scout II. However, when it arrived at the workshop, it was anything but standard. The vehicle was fitted with a 4” body lift and a reverse-leaf, dual-shock suspension setup front and rear—modifications that were non-compliant, requiring a complete rework.
The build brief was clear: retain the unmistakable 1970s character while transforming the Scout into a reliable, everyday off-road vehicle. The end goal was a capable and compliant machine—equally at home cruising to the beach, exploring the outdoors, and being enjoyed roof-off as originally intended.
Body & Exterior
The 1979 International Scout II SWB arrived as a long-abandoned rolling shell, finished in aged primer with most remaining components loosely stored in the rear tub. Once fully stripped and sandblasted, the body revealed surprisingly solid metalwork, allowing for a complete nut-and-bolt restoration with minimal panel replacement. The chassis was blasted and powder-coated for long-term durability, while the original steel roof required only light restoration work. A custom rear roll bar was fabricated to suit open-top off-road use, adding both strength and safety while preserving the Scout’s classic proportions.
Engine & Drivetrain
Although the Scout came with 392 V8, a previous rebuild had rendered the engine unusable. A replacement 345 V8 was sourced and fully rebuilt, restoring factory character with modern reliability. Fuel delivery is handled by a FiTech EFI system, improving drivability and cold-start performance while remaining visually discreet. The engine is paired with a rebuilt automatic transmission, along with a refreshed transfer case and driveline. Supporting upgrades include an alloy radiator, electronic water pump, and electronic power-steering pump to enhance cooling efficiency and reduce parasitic load.
Suspension & Braking
The suspension and braking systems were completely refurbished to complement the restored chassis and drivetrain, ensuring the Scout performs with confidence both on and off the road. Diff locks were added front and rear to significantly enhance off-road capability. The updated setup delivers stable handling, improved ride quality, and dependable stopping power, making it well suited to touring and recreational off-road use.
Interior & Trim
Inside, the Scout received a completely new interior. The seat frames were rebuilt and retrimmed in factory-style patterns using durable marine-grade materials, making them ideal for wet conditions and roof-off driving. A traditional-style bikini top was made to provide protection from the sun and light rain while retaining the open-air driving experience. A new set of gauges, a complete American Autowire wiring loom, modern navigation, USB ports, and an upgraded sound system bring improved reliability, usability, and comfort to the cabin—all while preserving a clean, period-correct appearance.
Custom Touches
Subtle yet purposeful enhancements elevate the Scout without compromising its heritage. These include LED lighting throughout, a custom billet grille, custom air conditioning integrated into the factory heater box, wheel flares, and bespoke tow and roll bars. The Scout sits on polished 15x11.5” rims wrapped in 32” Nankang Conqueror A/T tyres, giving it an aggressive stance and confident off-road capability. The finished result retains the rugged charm of the original Scout, now refined with modern responsiveness and long-range reliability.
